Creative Cogs

My interest is in drawing and painting figurative pieces.  I look to capture my subject in unusual postures and at curious angles rather than taking the traditional approach to portraiture.

My designs are based on photographs of my own and from fashion photography of which I manipulate with the use of Photoshop. Fashion photography is particularly useful because the models are presented as elegant, beautiful and sensual, themes of which I look to exhume in my own work.

I chose to adopt a stylised drawing technique within my work that was inspired by artists within the Art Nouveau movement, with particular reference to Gustav Klimt.

During university I saw my work develop from a realistic representation to that of the abstracted. Within my latest work I have endeavoured to create larger, more expressive and abstracted portraits. Each painting represents thoughts, emotions and personality rather than concentrating upon the aesthetics of a person’s appearance. This is achieved through further manipulation of the original image and adoption of a variety of media and processes. Form, line and colour are the focus of each painting creating intrigue as to the original subject of each piece. Negative spaces have also been captured within these works which are as interesting and as important as the subject.
